Although the Tibetan Yak originated in the Himalayan Region of the Asia Indian subcontinent, the Tibetan Plateau and as far North as Mongolia and Siberia they have made their way to the United States.
Why did we choose Yaks? The meat is leaner, tastier and healthier than beef! The Bullan's started researching Yaks to raise as livestock and decided to order a case of Yak after much research and we were hooked. We knew this was the livestock we wanted to raise not only to help reach our goal of self sustainability, but to have access to this delicious healthy meat. At a later date, we plan to have yak available for purchase.
Yak's are a multi-purpose livestock. Their meat is delicious and healthy, their fiber is amazing for spinners, they will turn their nose at grain but love to forage on grasses and shrubs which is ideal for fire clearance on our ranch. They are not picky foragers, so for us they help maintain the ranch and keep nuisance weeds and shrubs at bay. They are not as hard on fencing as some other livestock and are easily kept in with basic fencing. Our yak fiber will be for sale shortly by the ounce for hand spinners and crafters.
Yak has no odor to them and they are easier on the land than cattle. They do not drag their feet, they pick them up so it doesn't destroy the ground or grasses. You can train your yak to walk on a lead, load in trailers and some even ride their pet yaks. In Tibet they have been trained to pack and pull a harrow to help farmers out. They can be raised to be friendly and docile farm pets.
As Yak ranchers, we look forward to growing our herd and offering quality livestock for you and your family to enjoy!
